M2: Legal and ethical

In this report I will be looking at the legal and ethical issues that I may come by when I am creating my website. This is needed to avoid any issues that may occur during the production of my website.  

During the creation of my website, I will be considering the legal issue of copyright, to avoid having any issues with Doncaster UTC I will be asking for permission to use their logo and ask for permission if I was allowed to make a website based on the college. For example, I will be asking for permission if I am allowed to use their logo, images of their building, images from their Facebook pages and their Instagram account. I will be using a model release because if I use any people for my website, I will gather a stating I have permission from them to use the photos on my website. To avoid having any issues with copyright images I will be taking my own photos of the college and will ask for any permissions I need to take the images inside the building, this will be done with a location acceptance form.  

When creating my website, I will be considering the thought of their needing to be accessibility features for users that may not have fully formed limbs or people with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson's. To accommodate for the users that may have these features I would make user that the buttons contained on my website will be larger so the users can click them easier. To make the website more accessible for everyone I will make sure that my menu bar is consistent throughout the whole website to avoid confusion, I will also make sure that there are ALT tags on the images so that if a user uses a screen reader, they can then access information on the images contained. To make sure that the colour contrast that I use will be consistent throughout the website, this adds to the relevance towards the website and how it contains the UTC logo colours. 

From there going to be images of students contained on the website there will have to be a data protection act put in place to make sure that the students are protected from being stalked, cyberbullied or them to be identity theft. To secure the students personal details for the form that will be on the website there will be a system that protect and doesn’t save the students details to minimise the possible issue of there being any information take being IP addresses, emails and names. There will be a data protection act and a consent form that the users would have to agree to talking about the possible issues.  

When making my website I will be ensuring to check if there are any offensive content contained on the website. To do this I will be checking my website for any words or content that can be considered offensive for anyone, I will be ensuring my client to make sure that they keep checking the website to make sure nobody posts any offensive content once I have built the website. I will be making sure there is no offensive content because it can then further mean that my client can end up having issues with other people and could end up being fined or taken to court for it.  

To make sure that the website contains appropriate information and content, I will be making sure that the client and myself will ensure that the students that can post onto the website are known and are monitored to make sure that they don’t give away any information that can damage the websites functionality. To avoid anyone commenting on the website and giving negative comments or fake news I will make sure that the comment section on the website is disabled to prevent there being any further issues happening. This obviously does not include on the form page that will be included on the website for other people will not be able to see any of the forms unless they are needed to be seen. 

 

In conclusion, I will be mindful of these legal and ethical issues that may occur to try and prevent the possible issues or to warn my client about them. I will make sure to brief my client on the possible issues to avoid any problems that may occur.
